Hold Onto You Dream

Everyone has a dream in Las Vegas. I hear about them all the time on the radio. Singer. Dancer. Comedian. Getting rich quick. Tying the knot. Whatever.

Many people strive to fulfill their dream, while others give it up. Maybe they think it’s too hard. Their family/friends don’t support the dream. Possibly someone shut them down. Or maybe they don’t have the confidence.

Grab your favorite beverage, a snack, sit back, and let me tell you a story. This is a true story. Or at least I believe it is, because I heard it from the horse’s mouth. But to give the man privacy, I will not mention who it is. If you’ve heard this story, or read it somewhere, you undoubtedly know who it is. But I will call him Spenser (for Hire).

A Man With a Dream

A young Spenser had a dream of being a writer. Spenser spent time (he didn’t tell me how long), writing his first novel. He lived in California, so he knew someone who knew someone who told him to send the manuscript to a literary agent. I will call him Hawk.

Back in the day, and because it was a personal connection, Spenser got a phone call to come to the Hawk’s office for a meeting.

Spenser introduced himself to Hawk and took a seat. Hawk asked Spenser if he had a regular job. Spenser said he did, he worked in the family business. Hawk told Spenser to give up his dream and don’t quit his day job, because he couldn’t write a story. Spenser slid quietly out the door, crushed.

But Spenser didn’t give up. He kept honing his craft, writing stories, and even dabbled in screenwriting. It took a while, but Spenser was noticed, signed contracts, and hit the big time because of his writing.

Fast Forward Several Years of Living the Dream

Spenser called Hawk’s office for an appointment, which of course was arranged lickety-split. After all, this was Spenser, requesting a meeting.

Spenser walked into Hawk’s office, and Hawk was gushing, saying how wonderful Spenser was, his work was fabulous, yada, yada, yada.

Spenser listened to the praise. After Hawk shut up, Spenser asked:

“I would like to ask something of you.”

“Of course,” Hawk said. “Anything for you. Whatever you want.”

Spenser stood up, looked Hawk in the eye, and said:

“Don’t you dare tell someone to give up their dream, ever again.”

Spenser walked out without saying another word.

Moral of the Story

If you truly desire your dream, don’t EVER give up on it. If it’s in your blood, keep fighting for it. Because you never know. You may be the next Spenser.

What is your dream? Have you made it a reality yet? I hope you haven’t given up. Just do it! My dream? I wanted to be Velma from Scooby Doo. Being smart, and solving mysteries.
