THE NEON DESERT MYSTERIES:
Writing my first series

My first manuscript is trying to find a home. Currently titled Call in for Murder, it is about a new Las Vegas radio personality who gives homespun advice on all kinds of relationships and gets caught up in a murder investigation because of it.

How did I come up with this radio personality idea?

For decades, people have called radio shows and wrote letters to newspaper advice columnists, asking for advice on how to fix their problems. I know Ann Landers had a degree in psychology, but I’m not sure about Abigail Van Buren.

A long time ago I saw a movie called Straight Talk, staring Dolly Parton. She played a woman who accidentally got thrust into a job giving on-the-air advice in a big city. She went through quite a few snafus, because the people who put her on the air thought she was someone else. She had to keep up a charade during the movie, even though it played havoc with her brain and her heart.

That movie was the catalyst for creating my character, Ashley Compton. Ashley doesn’t have any formal credentials, just a lot of lessons learned from her own mistakes in her 30+ years of life. She feels compelled to make sure people didn’t fall into the same traps she did. She wants to save other people, in a non-superhero sort of way.

She talks to her callers like she’s their best friend, which her producer thinks is a bad idea. Instant conflict. She pulls no punches and doesn’t go delicately into the situation; she charges like a bull with her advice. Because a true best friend will sometimes dole out harsh advice, whether it’s liked it or not. That can create a heap of trouble, including losing the best friend or giving bad advice that makes a bigger mess than before.

Why Las Vegas?

People ask me about why I chose the Las Vegas Desert for my mystery series since it’s not a closed setting. That’s the standard for the traditional mystery genre. I chose Las Vegas because I love Las Vegas. I’ve always been fascinated with the place, the history, and its perceived magic. I’ve taken

several trips to get the feel of the area and the vibe it gives off and talk to people who frequent the place. Yes, I know a lot of gamblers, but believe me, there’s more to Vegas than the casinos.

I’ve been on the major tours, and some little, hardly advertised tours as well. These smaller tours were fun to gather little known facts about the area and finding spots only the locals know of. I even did a foodie tour and ate my first caviar.

I try to interview people for research. Mayor Goodman’s office would not return my phone calls asking him about his time as a mob lawyer versus his (at the time) current position as the mayor of Sin City. I was privileged to watch a talk radio show broadcast and talked to bot the host and her producer. The casinos insist no one cheats in Las Vegas, even though people keep getting added to the banned list.

There are so many things that everyone assumes only happens in Las Vegas, baby!  I made a list of these kinds of tropes, or things people automatically associate with Las Vegas. This list alone could net me at least a dozen books in a series!
